2020: A Year in Review

Leon Adams II- “Bonding with family during lockdown and really finding myself during quarantine.”

Manasi Agisgekar- “My friends.”

Trinity Allen- “The months in between school quarantine and summer.”

Kenyon Baldwin- “One memory I have of 2020 is going on bike rides with my family and all getting ice cream in the summer.”

Celeste Batiste- “Going into lockdown March 14, or going to protests.”

Charles Beadle- “Probably getting accepted to my dream college. That or one of the flights I did. There was one flight I did a couple months ago. I went up just after a storm had finished passing through, and ended up flying to Front Royal Virginia. Flying pretty much at 3000 feet, just watching the sun slowly begin to set and the clouds off in the distance with barely a gust of wind was incredible.”

Eric Benitez- “I went to El Salvador for about 2 weeks.”

Christian Bishop- “Staying up late and playing video games with friends.”

Morgan Blood- “The amount of teenagers that developed depression because of quarantine.”

Kiera Breisch- “I’ll always remember hanging out with my family and making baked goods during quarantine.”

Alexandra Broadhurst- “Going on a road trip to Minnesota with my best friend and her family.”

Summer Campbell- “Waking up early in the summer to watch the sunrise.”

Ember Carrera- “I’ll always remember the Friday the thirteenth that marked the beginning of a new era in my life. Quarantine started and we said goodbye to the halls of UHS for a long time.”

Talon Cruz- “I will always remember a conversation I had a couple of weeks before the schools shut down. At a set build for the musical, I made a joke about the spreading of Covid being the apocalypse, and my friend assuring me that it isn’t the end of the world. I often consider texting him, “I told you so.”

Caroline Cummings- “I’d probably say a memory i have of 2020 would be going to school everyday and getting to see all my friends and my favorite teachers and now realizing how much i miss it.”

Aliyah Cupeta- “A memory I will carry with me is the feeling of remembrance towards high school pre-covid, but also the fun summer memories created despite the circumstances.“

Lindize Gordon- “The Thursday before we were told to leave school when there were rumors about someone having COVID in the school–it was super creepy.”

Jordan Hyde – “Taking the AP exams at home.”

Samantha Jones – “Volunteering at a Halloween Trick or Treat event. It was pouring down rain, but I enjoyed it.”

Olivia Keller  – “Finally getting to go back to track practice, which made it feel almost like everything was normal again and let me experience the joys of high school for a few hours a week.”

Sean Kelty – “I’ll never forget how much time I’ve spent in bed whether it be doing schoolwork or just being flat out bored.”

Ashley Kight – “I will remember going on walks and watching movies with my family everyday.”

Jessica Kilgore – “One memory is before COVID in February we had our state meet for indoor track and I’ll always remember the bus ride there. Everyone was nervous and excited and then we were all happy and celebrating on the bus ride home. I think COVID made it even more memorable because sports got cancelled after COVID so it made me appreciate being able to compete and celebrate with my team even more.”

Olivia Koogle – “When I went to see Cats with a group of friends in late January.”

Aahana Kothandaraman – “My memory from this year would probably be my first ambulance call I got to respond to.”

Hannah Kurylo – “When my friends, Olivia, Sam, and I were planning something for homecoming at Starbucks after months of not seeing each other.”

McKenna Ladson – Being able to take lots of trips and vacations and making lots of memories because of online school.

Rachael Lee – Facetiming people during quarantine because I couldn’t see them

Hasita Madduri – “I was at a club competition in March, and I will never forget finding out that we were off from school for two weeks while we were there and being sent home from the competition.”

Peter Radzikevich – “I got to see my first Broadway shows in January before the shutdown.”

Omar Sabra – “Just the way that society has been forced into technology in many respects, like how businesses started using contactless pickup. I’m excited for what the future holds!”

Nuhad Samad – “One memory I will always have from this year is back in March when the virus started spreading and a lot of things were being cancelled. I was looking forward to a lot of things. When lockdowns started it left a bad taste in my mouth that hasn’t really gone away yet.”

Henry Shapiro – “One memory I’ll always have is trying to fix my sleep schedule for all of virtual school.”

Gabriella Shaw – “Being told during musical rehearsals that we were going to be gone for two weeks and thinking to myself ‘yay, two weeks of sleep!'”

Madison Sheffield – “My memory from 2020 was going to disney in february i swear i didn’t go during the pandemic”

Isabella Slyman – “The first FaceTime I had with friends on March 13, the first day of quarantine–it was nice to exchange thoughts and reactions and connect with people I trusted while so many things couldn’t be relied on anymore.”

Rachel Smoln – “How happy I am because I was able to spend so much time with my family.”

Page Stapleton – “Probably the last time [before the pandemic] I ran out to get food with friends right before a glee club performance at the middle school and I went to burger king with a few friends and we were all talking about where we were going with glee club and that was the last time I was out since march I think.”

Evan Williams – “I would have to say it would be having a smaller than normal Thanksgiving with the same amount of food, it was a fun night with a lot of people missing but we still had fun, especially when I just kept going back for food all night.”

Morgan Williams – “Even though it was a crappy year, I learned the value of true friends.”

Teagan Wootton – “Our last day of school in march, when they came over the announcements to tell us.”

Alexis Yim – “My most memorable moment of 2020 was having a socially distanced outdoor picnic with a small group of friends the day before virtual school started. It was nice to see them and talk about what we did over the summer, how this pandemic impacted us, and what our hopes were for the upcoming school year. I think meeting with them brought my hopes up a bit and let me know that I wasn’t alone in my troubles.”

Rebecca Allen – “Sitting in school when they announced school was out for 2 weeks and we were so excited cause we thought it would be a nice short break. ”

Megan Braun – “Eating Thanksgiving dinner with my dad and not seeing alot of my family this time of year.”

Lauren Broder – “One memory that I won’t forget for 2020 was the day that they told us we won’t be having any more school. At the moment, it was a good thing and I was happy that we didn’t have school. I actually wasn’t at school the last two days because of my allergies and stuff. (ps it wasn’t Covid) However, online school was okay yet there were a lot of experiences that were missed which is a little upsetting. Everything was stressful. ”

Kimberly Bucknor – “The presidential election!”

Logan Burge – “I will never forget my trip with my family. We had to drive away from Bison, we got lost in the middle of nowhere for 5 hours and had to get saved. But we made amazing memories and many inside jokes. It made me appreciate and love my family more.”

Alicia Clerch – “The last day we were in school, everyone thought we were just going to have a long break and be back in two weeks but i remember being so happy and chill in every class.”

Hailey Cline – “Being excited to get out of school for two weeks. Those two weeks turning into months and being introduced to online school.”

Ivy Coldren – “I think I’ll always remember the moment I found out the election had finally been called. I was with my best friend and someone texted her about it so we looked it up and there it was! We started freaking out and running around celebrating ?”

Jada Collins – “Visiting my family was memorable in 2020, having to follow all the COVID rules.”

Caroline Croft – “A memory I’ll always have from 2020 is us having to fake a homecoming with barely anyone and not even being able to go inside, I’ll always have the pictures of us wearing masks and have that story to tell.”

Noah Cummings – “I’ll just say the creativity that goes into those activities and other co-curricular groups after and outside of school due to the times.”

Craig Davis – “When I was surfing this summer and I was riding down the line of a wave and a school of dolphins was surrounding me and my friends. It was just a cool experience.”

Audrey Dean – “All the calls with my friends, and the way I had to alter my life to still be yours but with a whole pandemic mixed into it.”

Nathaniel El Taher – “Ok well the most memorable thing about 2020 that I will never forget what I was doing would probably be coming out of my soccer game and no one was there to pick me up so I was just there alone and then I call my step mom and she is crying and tells me Patrick my step brother died. But a happy moment would probably be going to top golf with my friends and family for my birthday.”

Elif Karakus  – “Summer because I got a lot closer with friends and I started a lot of new hobbies.”

Amogh Kashyap – ” It’s prolly the night when I realized and learnt a lot of things about myself and what I want to be. I realized that I don’t want a 9-5 job or to work for anyone. I want to start a business and work for myself. I also learnt that I would do anything to make my dreams a reality. I also realized another thing that night. Nobody’s really there for you, no matter what happens, as long as you are there for yourself, you’ll be fine.”

Divija Katakam – “I wasted like six months doing nothing and i also started watching anime”

Gabriel Khawaja – “How dissimilar it was to be 6-feet away from all the people you love the most and at family gatherings.”

Mary Kolb – “Working on the farm , with the animals and just having fun at home trying to make the best of everything. Finding myself and taking time just for me. Also theater in general because even though we are on line we still are ourselves and we still are laughing like we always do!”

Ayva Levow – “The time I went into Giant and saw +20 people raiding the toilet paper aisle (one of whom wasn’t wearing a mask)”

Abigail Logan – “one memory i will always have from 2020 is dressing in the way i like for the first time and finally feeling truly myself”

Hannah Longo – “probably being able to see my friend again after quarantine.”

Paige Magill – “A memory I will always have is the coronavirus having a huge impact on my life and having to social distance because that’s something I thought would never happen and especially online school I will always have that memory of just being isolated”

Sarah Mansoor  – “The summer time, because it showed me that even under the worst circumstances people will still try to find joy in what they are doing, like when I got to see my friends obviously taking precautions I was still happy. So realizing that taking care of yourself and others there are still ways to get around”

Leah Martinez – I think one memory I’ll always have from this year is working on the It’s a Wonderful Life crew. It’s been really enjoyable and it’s my first show at UHS so I’ll for sure keep that memory for a long time.

Eva Mason – “biking around dc near the white house and seeing broken windows, graffiti, people with masks, posters, blasting music, and black lives matter painted on the street.”

Cindy Max-Grant – “One memory I will have from 2020 is our last day of school because of covid. Honestly I was really happy but I didn’t know how much it would change my life. Also my 16th birthday because it wasn’t what I would’ve thought I would have when I was younger. In my family we always have big birthdays and everyone from around the us and England would come but COVID changed that. So I had a small bday but I was still happy to have it.”

Gabriella Mbaoua – “I’ll probably remember the first read through of It’s a Wonderful Life because I remember being really excited because it was the most exciting thing that I had done during the school year.”

Helena Ortiz- “One memory I won’t forget is going on a covid friendly vacation with my friends. It was weird to have to quarantine and take part in all of the procedures to make it safe but it was also so much fun!!”

Galila Ibrahim – “My most memorable moment was the day they announced we were going into quarantine, I was on a field trip for FBLA and we had just gotten into our hotel rooms. Everyone was panicking and trying to figure out what’s happening and our advisor just told us to get on the bus and return back to the school. It was such a memorable day because it showed me just how quickly an amazing day filled with friends and laughter can turn scary and hectic.”

Madeline Ireland – “Virtual school because it has been one of the most stressful experiences of my entire life, but it has taught me independence and self discipline.”

William Brookes – “The very first rehearsal. Not only was it a new environment being a part of a high school production, but the fact that it was all virtual made the experience really odd but unique. It was an environment that took getting used to, but I eventually felt right at home due to all the awesome people in the production.”

Gabrielle Dwoskin – “My birthday was only a few weeks after the pandemic and since we couldn’t hang out, my friends surprised me by decorating my lawn and driveway! They painted rocks and made cards for me and it was so meaningful that they went out of their way to make my birthday special even when we couldn’t see each other.”
