The Urbana Boys Cross Country team competed in the Frederick County Championship on Thursday Oct. 24, defending their county title win from 2023.
The boys were able to put on a strong performance being able to win back to back in the varsity race.
Six of the runners were in the top 20 and helped the team score well. However, the top seven were cut down to six with Cole Cline (Class of 2027) having to pull out of the race right after the first mile due to a side stitch.
Fortunately, the team was able to have Joshua Rothery (Class of 2026) lead the Hawks coming in 3rd place with a time of 16:10.3. Following after were Korey Kauflin (Class of 2026), Simon Lipchock (Class of 2027), Evan Madraymootoo (Class of 2027), Luke Acton (Class of 2025) and Matthew Rodrigues (Class of 2028).
On the JV side, they were able to get the fourth win in a row for the Frederick County Championship. This was a celebration on both sides of the team. Both being able to be satisfied with the results that they put in.
The course was changed and was a new location from last year, making it an interesting course to see the runners face. Team Captain Jake Kramer (Class of 2025) said “Courses will always be challenging but in the end it’s the people around you that you have to work hard for.”
This is a good stepping stone for the Boys Cross Country team as they move to the 4A West Region Championship next week, Thursday Oct. 31 at Lakelands Park.
There are better things in front of the team. This is only stop two of four in this championship journey.
