Urbana boys indoor track and field season is already underway with athletes and coaches excited for this winter season.
After the graduation of a very impactful senior class last year, Urbana is looking for who can step up this season to lead a team ridden with potential. New runners and coaches are hoping to continue the improvement of the boys track and field program that has been consistent throughout the past few seasons.
When Kyle Grimm stepped down as the head coach of Urbana track and field a few months ago, it was obvious there would be massive changes facing the team this year.
Head cross country coach Mrs. Jacqueline ”Mango” Suarez stepped up as the new head coach. On the sprints side, former DII runner Mr. Avery Boea-Gisler took the role as Urbana’s sprint coach.
The program also introduced cuts this year to focus on developing their best athletes possible. These cuts have caused many changes in how athletes see the program and the overall team culture. Suarez mentioned some of these changes such as that,

On the sprints side, team expectations vary as this year’s team of sprinters is relatively inexperienced, but full of talent.
When it comes to goals, Boea-Gisler said, “We’re hopefully going to have a place in regionals or states.”
These high hopes aren’t just seen in the coaches, but also in the runners mentality as well. Senior captain Murphy Hines has high expectations for the team but also himself as he said his personal goals are to, “Try to break the 55 school record, qualify for new balance nationals, and make the state finals.”
Along with the captain, coaches mentioned that some runners to look out for on the sprint side are Joshua Ogbummor (Class of 2027), Finn Hines (Class of 2026), Ishaan Curtis (Class of 2027), and Jaehziel Peak(Class of 2027).
When it comes to long distance runners, cross country already gave a sneak peek on what to expect from the distance program at Urbana this year. Highlighted by extremely talented underclassmen with some experienced returning veterans, Urbana’s distance program is supposed to be one of the best in the state this year.
Some distance runners to expect a lot from this season include Riley Gallogly (Class of 2027), Korey Kauflin (Class of 2026), Eyal Russ (Class of 2027), Joshua Rothery (Class of 2027), and Koen Edwards (Class of 2028).
Despite being indoors, there are three field events during the indoor track season in Maryland which are high jump, shot put, and pole vault.

High jump was another event that lost a majority of its athletes to graduation last year so it’s up to high jump coach Mr. Grant Friedland to find new talent for this indoor and outdoor season. Friedland said that his goals for this indoor season are to “Establish a good foundation so that when we get to outdoor we have an established team culture.
For the other two field events, Urbana is relying on two experienced seniors: Will Thompson for shot put and Eyob Jigsa for pole vault. Other names to look for this year in the field are Brelon Williams (Class of 2025), Venkat Komaragiri (Class of 2028), Nadjimou Agbere (Class of 2025), Ethan Wright (Class of 2026), and Ryan O’Rear (Class of 2025).
This season is going to be a hard one to predict for Urbana with so little experience, but so much talent this season should be a fun one. On the distance side, Korey Kauflin and Riley Gallogly look to continue their success from last year and cross country. For sprints there aren’t clear cut best runners with one of the team’s goals for this season being finding a sprint foundation for outdoor.
With the Mercersburg season opener on Friday, December 13th and the Jeff Spielman Winter Classic on Saturday, December 14th. Urbana hopes to continue their high roll for an unpredictable season to come.
