The Legacy Award is a tradition at the UHS Drama Department that started in 2021 after coming back from quarantine. Every show, drama students in the show vote on their peer who they believe should be honored for their hard work and should be remembered in the department. The student chosen is then typically revealed opening night, and their name gets to be added to the plaque of past winners in Mr. Stephen Ward’s office.
This year’s recipient for Night of the Living Dead was announced during the Saturday Matinee performance, due to scheduling issues with this particular show. The winner of the Legacy Award for this show was Chris Oh (Class of 2025), the Design Manager.
Students decided to honor him due to the vast amount of time that he has poured into helping paint and design the set and props for the show. However, his contribution goes beyond that. He has been honored not only for the work he has put into the productions set and design but also for his caring personality. Oh is someone who always makes an effort to make sure no one is left out in the design process, and he always makes those around him happier through his infectious positivity.
Oh was very happy winning the award but has not let it get to his head, saying “Receiving the Legacy Award was a bittersweet happiness. Knowing I was robbing the chance someone else had at getting it weighed my shoulders, but knowing that my peers chose me to receive it because they thought highly of my work was a heartfelt gesture. I quite literally could never have gotten the award if it wasn’t for the humbleness of the department.”
Past winners of the Legacy Award include; Lucas Sanchez (Class of 2022), Sean DiGiorgio (Class of 2022), Sarah Benson (Class of 2022), Lydia Shrek (Class of 2023), Sofia Nunez (Class of 2023), Caitlin Sigler (Class of 2023), James Barrows (Class of 2024) and Gabrielle Dwoskin (Class of 2024).
