With the winter season starting, this means that winter sports are now going! With this, Urbana’s swim team is back and already hard at work in the water.

The Hawks are putting in a couple weeks of hard work before their first dual meet against Thomas Johnson on December 9th! The first meet is when we will get our first taste of the team’s speed including the team relays.

When thinking about our strongest races as a team it always comes back to our relays. Urbana has lots of diversity especially when it comes to all the strokes, but what relay will be our strongest this year? Jackson Steele, (Class of 2027) shares his thoughts on this “I think our strongest relay this year will be the 200 yard freestyle relay, we have a lot of strong sprinters so I am excited to see what we can do.”

With the beginning of the new season we will have 2 new coaches for our men’s team as well as hard working Coach Kelly Funk returning for the women’s team. Coach Funk has some notes about this season and what our goals are this year

With all the memories made last season, Urbana has a strong sense of community within the team. Andrej Gibson, (Class of 2025) shares what he is looking forward to most this upcoming season, “I am most excited about being around my teammates again and just overall having fun at the meets this season.”

Returning to dominate, Gabe Silver (Class of 2026) is returning to continue his diving. Silver swept the County Championship 1 meter diving, winning over second place by 58.3 points. Urbana cannot wait to see his progress this year and what he will accomplish!

Urbana is always looking for new ways to incorporate team spirit. With the help of the captains, managers, and coaches, Urbana will be looking forward to our new spirit days and dress up days scheduled for the meets. Stay tuned for what the seniors decide on for the senior night dress up!

All in all, Urbana has a long season ahead of them, and this is only the start. With the new swimmers, new goals, and same team spirit, Urbana is thrilled to kick this season off in a couple of weeks!
