Possibly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Captain Marvel, was just released on March 8. The movie did not disappoint, delivering a perfect mix of action, comedy, heart, and a special cat named Goose. On the first weekend it earned about $153 million at the North American box office and brought in $455 million worldwide. This made the film the biggest worldwide opening for a female-led film ever. The movie was Marvel Studios’ first movie starring a female character, which was exciting for many fans. The release date also coincided with International Women’s Day. This is an important year for Marvel Studios with the release of three highly anticipated movies: Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Captain Marvel received a rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes described it as “packed with action, humor, and visual thrills.” A critic from Empire magazine said, “As a Nick Fury buddy comedy, it’s fun. As a feminist fable it’s essential.Urbana students also enjoyed the movie. One student, Sydney Hsu, even said, “It was the best Marvel movie I’ve ever seen.”

The movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. When the movie begins, Captain Marvel is a Kree soldier called Vers. She eventually finds herself on Earth, trying to understand the mystery of her forgotten past life, there she meets Nick Fury. The plot centers around the pair as they find themselves caught up in a war between the Kree and Skrulls, enemy aliens. The chemistry between Fury and Captain Marvel adds a lot of heart and humor to the movie, with their amusing banter and jokes making the audience laugh and bringing the characters to life. The movie is set in the mid-90s with Blockbuster’s and old computers giving the film a certain nostalgic charm. It also takes place before Nick Fury loses his eye, so fans will finally learn how it happened.

The movie doesn’t shy away from action either. It is jam-packed with fight scenes and even spaceship battle scenes reminiscent of Star Wars. Captain Marvel is in the center of many of these fight scenes, showing off not only her superpowers, but also her girl power. Even with many lovable characters such as Carol’s friend Maria Lambo, Nick Fury, and Captain Marvel herself, it was not hard for fans to pick a favorite. By far the most popular and lovable character in the movie was Goose, the adorable orange cat that followed the characters around on their adventures and captured fans’ hearts. As sophomore Cassie Jones said, “Goose is the best character because he adds the comedy factor–and who doesn’t love a cute cat?”  All in all, the movie is a must-watch, whether for the action, the comedy, or even just for the adorable cat Goose.
