Another year has come to a close, and again, it was tumultuous, to say the least. Between the inauguration of a new president, to the reopening of schools, this year has had its highs and lows like any other. Starting with the new year, going into new years eve, 2021 has rocked the world.

January:

6th – Supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to object to the naming of Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election. Several official government buildings and threats to hundreds of government officials.

8th – Former president Donald Trump was banned from Twitter sparking outrage over the 1st Amendment rights of the people on social media outlets. This was also the day the last episode of Jeopardy! Aired with Alexander Trebek as its host. 

20th – President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were inaugurated into their respective posts.

February:

2nd – Jeff Bezos announces that he will be stepping down as the CEO of Amazon. “Bezos is handing day-to-day duties to his longtime deputy Andy Jassy but will continue to hold considerable sway as the company’s executive chairman,” reports Bobby Allyn of NPR. 

7th – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV winning Tom Brady his 7th Super Bowl win. 

9th – Former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial began and several republicans voted with the democrats saying that the impeachment was constitutional. 

13th – The Senate voted to acquit former president Trump of all charges in his impeachment trial.

19th – Kim Kardashian made the announcement that she was filing for divorce from rapper Kanye West after seven year of marriage.

March: 

7th – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle throw several accusations toward the Royal family and the palace in a tell-all interview with Oprah.

23rd – A large cargo ship – the Ever Green – became stuck in the Suez Canal halting global trading for days as  well as becoming an overnight sensation on the internet. One Urbana junior said, “I remember that so much because it basically blew up the internet. I mean there were memes about it EVERYWHERE.”

29th – The trial against the former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd began.

April:

9th – Prince Phillip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II died at 99 years old.

24th – Derek Chauvin is convicted of all charges in the killing of George Floyd. Chauvin was sentenced to 24 years in prison

July: 

23rd – The 32nd Olympic games held in Tokyo started with the traditional opening night and light of the torch.

August:

31st – All American Troops had been pulled out of Afghanistan leading to the Taliban taking over Afghanistan and regaining a level of control over the country that it hasn’t seen in over 20 years. 

September:

15th – Simone Biles and several of her teammates testified against the FBI’s handling of the case against Larry Nassar, who was convicted of the sexual abuse of underage gymnasts that he had treated while working as the trainer for the American Olympic gymnastics team. 

18th – Tens of thousands of Haitian Immigrants became stranded underneath a bridge in Texas whilst trying to cross the border into America. 

October:

25th – Sudan announced a state of emergency after the military dissolved the country’s power-sharing government. 

November:

24th – A less deadly, but more transmittable strand of Covid-19, named Omicron, was reported to the World Health Organization.

December:

31st – Actress and national icon, Betty White died just days before her 100th birthday. Lily Poska, 10, says, “I still can’t believe she’s dead. She was an American institution.”
