This 2024 school year brought a lot of new changes to Urbana High School. From the new phone policy to the school-issued Chromebooks, Urbana has been filled with change. One of the most impactful changes has been the addition of our newest assistant principal, Mr. Christopher Berry. With many years of experience in education and administration, Berry is already making a significant impression on both students and staff alike.
Social Studies teacher Mr. Grant Friedland describes his short time spent with Berry as “Very good, it’s early in the school year but so far I’ve had good experiences working with him.” Freidland appreciates Berry’s love of Baltimore sports, saying “We were talking about the Orioles and my bobblehead collection.”
In a recent interview, Berry shared insights about his journey in education and what motivates him in his new role. “I’ve spent over 30 years in education, and this is my 20th year as an administrator,” he explained. Starting his career as a social studies teacher, he eventually transitioned into administrative roles, serving as an assistant principal for six years and a principal for 14 years.
His return to the assistant principal position, he said, was a conscious choice to be able to work more closely with students again.
Berry’s decision to join Urbana High School was influenced by many factors. “I live in Newmarket, so it’s 12 minutes away,” he stated, adding that the school environment reminded him of those he experienced previously in Montgomery County. “Sometimes they jokingly say Urbana is like Montgomery North,” he chuckled.
Mrs. Samira Diggs, another new addition to Urbana’s 2024-2025 staff, previously worked with Berry during his time at Brunswick High School. “I really enjoyed working with Mr. Berry. Throughout my time working at Brunswick, he was always a very present and passionate principal.”
He is particularly impressed by the students’ focus and respect. “I like that they’re just really about the business of school,” he stated, talking about the positive atmosphere at Urbana.
As a leader, Berry loves collaboration. “I like to pull people in to get their input,” he said, sharing his belief in the importance of student voice in decision-making. His systematic approach to leadership is evident in the drills and routines being implemented this year. “There’s a method to the madness,” he remarked, assuring that students and staff alike, understand the reasons behind their activities.
When it comes to handling conflicts, Berry prioritizes listening. “It’s about making sure we’re calm and I’m listening to what the other people have to say first,” he explains. “I really want to try and get to the root of what’s causing the conflict,” he said, showing that he believes that understanding students’ perspectives are vital to resolving issues effectively.
Engaging with parents and the broader community is another key aspect of his new approach. He stressed the importance of timely and clear communication. “I don’t want them thinking that I’m not trying to be in communication with them,” he said, talking about his efforts to connect with parents regularly.
By ensuring agreement with parents’ goals and supporting their involvement in the school, Berry hopes to create a positive school culture.
Looking ahead, Berry is focused on succeeding in his current role. “I’m just really looking forward to doing this job,” he said, sharing his enthusiasm for the opportunities at Urbana.
As he navigates this new chapter, he appreciates the support from fellow staff members and the community. “I’ve got a lot of help, and I really like this school,” he concluded.
With Berry’s years of experience and collaborative spirit, Urbana High School is on track for another successful year. His commitment to student engagement and community involvement promises to create an environment where both students and staff will thrive.
