This Tuesday through Friday, UHS Red Cross Club is selling Love Grams in the cafeteria. Each Love Gram contains either a brownie or Rice Krispie Treat, a heart lollipop, and a personal message from the sender. The money raised from the purchase of a Love Gram ($3) goes to a Red Cross Fundraiser.
St. Valentine’s Day is a way to celebrate those who are important to you. Its origin is speculated to have begun in The Catholic Church after the martyr of Valentine or Valentinus. One legend says that Valentine was a priest who secretly married people after it was outlawed by Emperor Claudius II. Another theory suggests that Valentine was executed for attempting to help Christians flee Roman prisons, where he met a girl he fell in love with. People believe that St. Valentines feast Day was placed in the middle of February to celebrate Lupercalia or to memorialize the death and burial of Valentine.
Despite all of this, Valentine’s Day didn’t gain its romantic meaning until the Middle Ages when it was believed that February 14 was the beginning of the birds mating season. Poet and author Geoffrey Chaucer referenced Valentines Day as a day of romance during the same period.
