Every year on November 11, America celebrates the federal holiday Veterans Day. This day is used to honor and recognize all military veterans of the United States’ Armed Forces.
This day takes place on November 11 to mark the day World War 1 ended. The armistice was an agreement made to end the fighting on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year.
Originally, the holiday was called Armistice Day but in 1954 they changed the name. This was to ensure that all veterans are celebrated, rather than only those who served in World War 1.
While Memorial Day celebrates fallen soldiers, today is about all who are a part of the military. This includes those who served during wartime and/or peacetime.
Former President John F. Kennedy said during his Thanksgiving Proclamation speech, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
He said this regarding all veterans and it is important that we all remember these words. Applying the skills soldiers have, can improve our country in many ways. However, just recognizing all that veterans have done for country makes a big difference.
