The students of Sugarloaf Innovative Pre-K were in for a surprise when a friendly dog visited their classroom for a unique learning experience.
A fluffy chihuahua mix named Ellie, was accompanied by Child Development teacher, Mrs. Meri Borland, who was eager to teach the students about her.
The minute Ellie entered the room, the children’s eyes lit up. Borland mentioned how Ellie had recently tore her ACL and received surgery. She told them about the care and how important it is to treat Ellie gently.
Mrs. Shannon Vetter, teacher of the Innovative Pre-K class, showed the children how to approach her calmly and respectfully.
After the quick introduction, it was time for the kids to have a personal encounter with Ellie. She sat calmly, her tail alert with excitement as the children took turns doing exactly as they had just been taught.
“It was a very important step because Pre-K students, Kairo and Nityasree both didn’t like dogs, but after meeting Ellie, they developed a sense of comfort.” Borland says.
This hands-on experience made the kids feel empowered and closer to animals, with many already excited to share what they learned with family members later in the day.
Ellie left the room with her tail wagging, but the students’ excitement lasted long after she had gone.
