Stomping to Victory
November 28, 2017
The Step Team at Urbana has started their second year here at Urbana. The captain is Jasmyn Caffey and the advisor is Victor Frush. Step is a type of dance that incorporates shouts, stomps, claps and synced coordination throughout the whole team. It’s meant to grab people’s attention and to stand out, loudyly and proudly.
Another vital aspect of Step is that the people on each team become very close-knit and it can become like a second family. It creates a sense of community and belonging to those involved, especially those who don’t feel that anywhere else.
Caffey said, “[Step is] a way of expressing myself and showing how strong I am as a person. Creating a Step Team with my friend at this school last year was a really nice experience because I got to feel like I was a part of something at this school, and I really felt like I could relate to Step in many ways. I like the idea of giving people that same feeling I have and giving them that opportunity to feel wanted at this school or involved in something at this school.”
