When will it actually change? FCPS School Budget issues…
May 12, 2023
Nothing is changing, there is always an issue with something in the budget. Salaries, materials and mainly redistricting and the population distribution. It’s almost like the walls are closing in on the students. Urbana Middle School is a thriving growing school, but it’s growing too quickly. As a 12th grader at Urbana High School, I find myself reminiscing about my middle school days. While I was doing this I remembered the difference between my 6th grade year, and my 8th grade year. Obviously there were many differences but the school population was the biggest difference. To me it felt like there were just so many more kids for each grade coming up after mine. My classes went from around the low 20’s to more of the high 20’s. It isn’t just the middle schools but all levels in all parts of the county. I would always think, why can’t they hire more teachers? Or extend the schools so they aren’t so crowded? There isn’t just one issue as this one issue grows into more issues like a virus until it’s inevitable to occur. But what if we found a cure for this viral problem? At the end of the day it all comes down to funding and how much revenue the school district brings in. According to the 2022 Fiscal budget for Frederick County Public Schools. The budget is complicated but it should be further reviewed by not only parents but the community as a whole. It seems like every year they’re short on money when they’re given the plus half of a billion dollars. Sure we can understand where they’re spending the money, but what exactly are they spending the money on? I suggest we take a bit of money out of every department just like a ration and put into teacher salaries so they have more of an incentive to come to work with passion, along with getting portables or extending the schools that are overpopulated. That is just my opinion personally. Others might agree or disagree which is fine. The main objective for us is to continue to push this discussion, so we can continue to change and improve our schools.
