As the class of 2025 approach their last year of highschool, “Senior Sunrise” celebrates the ‘beginning of the end’.
Today, the senior class was supposed to report to Legacy Field early in the morning to watch the sunrise but Hurricane Helene had other plans.
The Senior Sunrise tradition was started over a decade ago and is now celebrated across many schools in the US. Many schools choose to have theirs at the beginning of the year or directly at the end.
Class president William Knepper choose September 26th because the 28th is Homecoming which creates excitement for the weekend amongst students.
He explained his decision, “the Sunrise lines up with Homecoming and the Homecoming game, this allows for three days of great senior events,” but now these thrill-seeking events could be affected due to the weather.
The alert of the cancellation didn’t come until 5AM when a Schoology message was sent by a staff member. Many students didn’t see this message and proceeded to get ready for their morning.
Senior Aiden Garwood described his experience this morning, “My friend Will got Dunkin donuts for the sunrise just to find out it was cancelled, we still got to eat them though…it just didn’t hit the same.”
Now, students are left without a rescheduled date but Knepper is trying his best to find a morning that works for everyone and doesn’t interfere with practices.
So Urbana… here’s to waking up super early again. Maybe this time, students will actually be able to eat donuts in peace while watching the sunset.
