In the hallways between classes and on the gym floor after school, it’s not unusual to see senior Kate Sigouin casually do a perfectly balanced pirouette. What surprises many classmates isn’t just the spin itself, but how effortlessly she makes it look. While Kate is known among friends for being able to perform her ballerina pirouettes almost anywhere, people don’t know that her graceful turns come from years of early ballet training. “I started ballet when I was really little, like a mini ballerina,” Kate said with a laugh. “I had the tiny pink shoes, the tights, everything.”
As a child, Kate spent hours at dance classes practicing posture, balance, and turns. Those early lessons helped her develop the coordination that still shows today when she spins with control and confidence. “I remember learning how to spot during turns and thinking it was the coolest thing ever,” she said. “Once you get the hang of it, spinning just feels natural.”
Although ballet was a big part of her childhood, Kate eventually decided to move on to other interests. “I quit ballet a few years later because I wanted to try different things and focus on school and other activities,” she explained. “But I guess the muscle memory never left.” Friends say her pirouettes often appear unexpectedly, whether she’s joking around during lunch or showing someone how ballet turns work. “It’s honestly impressive,” one classmate, 10th grader Vivienne Cao, said. “She’ll just spin perfectly like it’s nothing.” Kate says she doesn’t practice regularly anymore, but the skill has stuck with her. “Sometimes people ask me to do a spin, and I’ll just go for it,” she said. “It’s funny because I don’t think about it much, but everyone else thinks it’s a big deal.”
Looking ahead to graduation, Kate says she’s grateful for the experiences she had growing up, even the ones she didn’t stick with long-term. “Ballet taught me balance, discipline, and confidence,” she said. “Even though I stopped dancing, it’s still a part of me.”
And judging by the effortless pirouettes she still performs today, that early training continues to leave quite an impression, one graceful spin at a time.
