AI is becoming a significant part of education , many students are already using it for their work. Tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly can help with homework, projects, and studying. Because AI is easy to access, it is changing how students do schoolwork. Some believe it helps students learn, while others think it makes students rely on it too much.
Many students use AI because it saves time and makes work easier. It can explain topics, help with homework, projects, or check their writing. Some students use it when they are confused, and others use it primarily to obtain answers more quickly. Since AI is being used more often, students and teachers are starting to question whether it should be allowed for school assignments.
One student, who chose to stay anonymous, said they have used AI “to do assignments.” They said AI “helps learning, when I’m confused it gives me the right answer.” They also believe AI should be allowed in school. This response highlights how some students view AI as something that helps them instead of something that causes problems.
Not everyone agrees with that. Another student, Ava Brown, said she has used AI “to generate answers,” but believes it hurts learning. “It definitely hurts learning,” Brown said. She also thinks AI should not be allowed for school assignments because students may start depending on it instead of actually learning the material.
Teachers have noticed changes in student work since AI became more popular. Dr. Nourse said AI can be helpful, but only when students use it correctly. “Learning is enhanced only if they’re not relying on it for answers,” Dr. Nourse said. “They can use it for projects. It’s helpful, but when they look up the answers from AI it’s a problem.”
One concern teachers have is that students may stop learning if they rely on AI too much. Dr. Nourse explained that when AI does the thinking, the information does not stick. “Students will not learn the material but rely on AI to give the info to them, so the info means nothing to them,” they said.
Even with these concerns, some teachers believe students can still use AI responsibly. Dr. Nourse said, “yes anyone can use it responsibly.” This shows that AI itself is not the problem, but how it is used.
As AI continues to be used more in schools, opinions about it remain mixed. Some students see it as helpful, while others think it takes away from real learning. How schools decide to handle AI could affect how students learn in the future.
