Sam Biggus, a very loved and respected custodian at Urbana High School—”I love Sam. “He’s so nice to me and my friends, and he’s funny and easy to talk to,” says a high school student named Grace Witte, who has spent many years working in schools. Before coming to Urbana, he worked at Linganore High School for 16 years. He has now been working at Urbana for three years, helping keep the building clean and running smoothly for students and staff.
Sam says one of the best parts of his job is the students. “My favorite part is the kids,” he said. He explained that he enjoys interacting with students and seeing them around the school each day. He mentioned how working at Urbana has been a positive experience because most students are respectful.
Sam plays an important role in keeping Urbana High School clean and organized each day. Along with around 13 other custodians, he helps maintain classrooms, hallways, and common areas so students and teachers can learn and work in a safe environment. His job includes cleaning spaces used by hundreds of students every day and making sure the building stays in good condition. Even though much of this work happens behind the scenes, Sam’s daily efforts help the school run smoothly.
Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time relaxing and having fun. Some of his favorite activities include watching movies, bowling, and going out to eat. He is also a sports fan and enjoys following the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Sam also shared an important message for students about respecting the school. He explained that janitors work hard to keep the building clean, but students should also take responsibility for their spaces. “We are not your maids,” Sam said. “If you make a mess, you should clean it up.”
Sam’s work helps create a clean and welcoming environment for everyone at Urbana. Although much of his work happens behind the scenes, it plays a big role in keeping the school running every day.
