Matcha and boba tea are both very popular drinks, especially among teens. Even though they are both tea-based, they offer very different experiences. Matcha is known for its smooth, earthy taste and simple ingredients, while boba tea is usually sweeter and includes toppings like tapioca pearls or jelly. Because of these differences, people often have strong opinions about which drink they like more. After interviewing ten people, it became clear that while some enjoy matcha’s simplicity, most prefer boba tea for its variety and fun textures.
For many people, boba tea stands out because it can be customized. Nimisha Bharati (Grade 10) said she likes boba because there are “so many flavors and toppings.” She explained that being able to choose different add-ins makes the drink more exciting and never boring.
Others prefer matcha because of its taste alone. Grace Witte (Grade 10) said she chooses matcha because it is “really smooth and enjoyable.” She likes that it is not overly sweet and feels simple and calming compared to boba.
However, some people pointed out problems with matcha. Khloe Troung (Grade 10) said she prefers boba because matcha can be inconsistent. “When matcha is made at bigger chain coffee shops, it can taste grassy instead of smooth,” she said. Because of this, she feels boba is more reliable and tastes the way she expects it to.
Variety was also important to Saraí Miler (Grade 11). She said she likes boba because there are many options, including different teas, flavors, and toppings. For her, having choices makes the drink more fun.
Texture was another reason people preferred boba. Nicole Oraca (Grade 11) explained that boba feels like “a drink and a snack at the same time.” The different textures make it feel like a treat instead of just a drink. Adrian Contreras (Grade 11) agreed, saying he prefers boba because there is more you can do with it compared to matcha.
In the end, while matcha was appreciated for its smooth taste and simplicity, boba tea was the clear favorite. Most people enjoyed boba because of its variety, texture, and ability to customize it. Based on the interviews, boba tea ultimately won the tea debate.
