When students struggle with homework, many now turn to artificial intelligence (AI) for help. AI can explain problems, give examples, and even help with writing. But what if AI did not exist? To explore this question, K&N Stories spoke with students about how they would finish their homework without AI tools, and how it might change their learning.
Before AI became popular, students depended on their notes, textbooks, classmates, and teachers. A 2023 Common Sense Media survey found that more than 60% of students use online tools for homework help. This shows how much students rely on technology today. Without AI, many students believe homework would take more time and effort.
Some students said they would begin by going over their class notes more carefully. “I would reread my notes and examples,” said Cam, an 11th grader. “It helps, but it takes longer.” His answer shows that traditional study methods can still work, even if they are slower. Without quick answers, students would have to think through problems on their own.
Planning ahead would also matter more. “I would start my homework earlier so I could ask questions in class,” said Sam, also an 11th grader. Without fast online help, students would need better time management. Waiting until the last minute would make homework much harder.
Classmates would be another important source of support. “I would ask friends in group chats,” said Ethan, a 12th grader. “It makes homework less stressful, but sometimes people are wrong.” This shows that working with friends can help, but it is not always correct.
Teachers would still be the most trusted help. Students said teachers understand the lessons best and can clearly explain mistakes during class or after school. Talking to a teacher in person can also make it easier to ask follow-up questions.
Without AI, homework might feel harder and take longer to finish. However, students might also build stronger study habits and learn how to solve problems on their own. As schools continue to use AI, questions remain. Would grades change without AI? Would students feel more stress? Would learning improve or get worse? More research is needed to understand how AI truly affects student learning.
