Being a student athlete takes more than just showing up to class, practice, and big games. For senior basketball captain Jaxon Howington, it takes time management, leadership, and overcoming pressure. He sets the standard for his teammates and other student athletes at Urbana High School.
As a 12th-grade basketball player, Howington leads by example when balancing basketball with academics. “I try to get my work done as soon as possible when I get home so that way I don’t have to worry after practice.” This routine helps allow Howington to stay locked in heading into games.
Urbana’s varsity basketball team this season has been up and down, recording 7 wins and 10 losses. Their biggest win comes against Thomas Johnson High School in a fierce regional matchup. Jaxon remarks this as his favorite memory this season, stating, “Beating TJ at their home court was definitely our best win of the year.” As captain, he keeps the morale up by telling his team, “Don’t dwell on the past and move on to the next game.” Howington stated. This mindset allows the team to continue to grow and get better day by day.
Howington’s goals for the rest of the season are simple but meaningful. “Work harder and get better each and every day,” focusing on personal growth and leadership. He believes that his team will go all the way to the regional championship.
After high school, he plans on enrolling in the military. If the military doesn’t work out, Howington hopes to switch gears into pursuing his educational prowess. When he is not focused on sports or school, he occupies his free time by relaxing and staying connected with his friends and teammates. Howington also enjoys eating his favorite foods while occasionally golfing. Howington values leadership and being someone others can rely on. A key part of his success is his teammate and role model, Brennan Zmuda, whose hard work creates chemistry and helps set the tone for the rest of the team.
As his senior season continues, Howington focuses on continuing to lead by example. Through his leadership, work ethic, and positive attitude, he sets the standard for what it takes to be a student athlete at Urbana High School. Whether it’s leading his team after tough losses, studying for a big test, or spending time with his friends, Howington’s dedication and leadership will leave a lasting impact on his teammates and the Urbana basketball team.
