Is Astrology Really Worth the Hype?

Annika Rosencrantz, Reporter

Astrology became very popular in the 1970s, mostly amongst young women. Recently it has gained popularity again online, with the rise of covid people began to become feeling helpless and needed something to turn to. The complete definition of astrology, according to Oxford Languages, is “The study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.”

UHS OPINIONS:

Mr. Absher, the philosophy teacher at Urbana High School, said that he felt very neutral about the topic. He believes there may be some correlation in the differences between people with winter birthdays and people with summer birthdays.

Neesha Patel, a senior, expressed to us enthusiastically that she is very interested in the subject of astrology. She believes that it’s something to put faith in when she’s feeling low. She herself has a March Aries sun and a Gemini moon.

Sasha Zvaners who also happens to be a senior, when asked how she felt responded with she did not assume automatically that there was some impact realistically. She was not dismissive of astrology as a whole and said that she respected it as something that people put their faith in.

SHORT DESCRIPTIONS:

There are four categories for the 12 signs: water, fire, air and earth.

Water signs consist of Cancer (June 21 – July 22), Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21), Pisces (Feb 19 – March 20). Cancer’s are the most emotional of the three signs. They can be sensitive and moody as well as protective and loyal. Scorpio’s can be secretive and passionate. People who have Scorpio placements are known to crave connections and are very persistent. Pisces are known to be emotionally sensitive and aware however they can struggle with asking/receiving help from others.

The Fire signs are known as the most bold and quick to action. Aries (March 21 – April 19), tend to act before speaking and talking problems head on. Ruled by the planet Mars, they are known to be fiery and passionate. Leo’s (July 23 – August 22) are a fixed fire sign which means they have traits such as determination and stability. The final of the fire signs, Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21) can be described as inspired and liking a challenge.

Air signs: Gemini (May 21 and June 21.), Libra (September 22 – October 23), Aquarius (January 19 – February 18 ). People who have Gemini placements tend to be very good at multitasking and are very social people. Gemini is ruled by Mercury which can mean that you are curious, flexible and adaptable. Libra’s tend to have a good eye for things and can be charming and considerate. This sign is ruled by the planet Venus which is the planet of love and relationships. Finally Aquarius is a fixed sign that is ruled by Uranus. Uranus is the planet of originality along with innovation and change. They are one of the most independent of the signs and they make very good leaders.

Last but not least of all are the earth signs. The earth signs are made up of Capricorns (Dec 21- Jan 20), Taurus (April 19 – May 20) and Virgo (August 23 to about September 22). Capricorns are described as not being a stranger to early difficulties at an early age and are said to “age backwards”. As a cardinal sign they are very good at taking initiative and make very good leaders. People who have Taurus placements are known to be ambitious and resilient. They are a fixed sign which contributes to their qualities of being loyal and reliable. Virgo’s tend to be logical and systematic. They are ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. While they are organized they tend to be self destructive in their attempts to chase what they want.
