Mrs. Chubb is one of twenty-two career coaches that were placed in the FCPS district’s Middle and High schools. This is her third year working at Urbana High School, where she has demonstrated her passion and dedication to educating her scholars, whether it be in finding jobs/opportunities for career interests, pursuing post-secondary education, or developing life skills.
When helping students discover what the next step for their future is, it doesn’t matter if it’s college, the workforce, a gap year, the military, or a trade school; Mrs. Chubb can help with any pathway. For some students, a four-year college career isn’t the path for them, and they know what they want for their future in a trade school; such as pursuing cosmetology, plumbing, construction, engineering, ect. which she can also help with. She highly encourages students to “Explore your options.” keeping students motivated to be open minded and unleash their full potential.
When you’re being evaluated, Mrs. Chubb may ask you the essential questions, such as: what career pathway that you want to pursue, what your interests and likes are, and what your preferred learning style is. She asks many questions such as these because she faced childhood adversity as a slow learner in special education services. Mrs. Chubb felt like she had a lot of people in the school system that weren’t helping her to discover her strengths and figure out what she can do with her future; and now, she strives to be the person she needed back then, connecting students for self discovery in career exploration. She encourages students to tap into whatever they are good at and passionate about, no matter what anyone may think. She believes, “Every student deserves a free and appropriate education,” which three years ago made her a perfect candidate for her dream job as a career coach.
Finding a job is something many students of many ages struggle with. For some students, there are jobs that might not even exist at the moment, but yet you align with. Mrs. Chubb can prepare you to identify your strengths and find the problem in society that you work to solve, and execute the steps to solve the problem. Additionally, after finding your strengths and areas of improvement, Mrs. Chubb can help you contact employers and find what they’re looking for in an employee. Not only will she guide you in the right direction, but she will teach you to be independent and be capable of pursuing what you want on your own, preparing you for the real world. Based on this information, she can help you develop skills and meet the requirements to get certain jobs, as well as find types of jobs that would suit you.
Making decisions for your future can feel overwhelming for many high school students. The job is less about predicting anyone’s future, and more about helping students understand who they are right now, and what steps they’re going to take to prepare for their future. If you are interested in working with Mrs. Chubb, it’s easy to do. Send her a schoology message and be sure to include the following: Your name, grade, reason for the email/ reason for wanting to meet, when you have lunch (i.e. 2nd lunch). She has “working lunches” where you bring your lunch, you can even bring a friend, and you will meet to discuss your topic of interest.
