Urbana’s lacrosse program has built a strong reputation over the past few seasons for its toughness and discipline. The team has been very successful due to their competitive playstyle at a high level. A player that stands out is Ben Almeida, an 11th-grade student at Urbana High School. Ben is a Dickinson College lacrosse commit and has been representative of what it means to be an Urbana lacrosse player. This is shown through his strong work ethic and outstanding leadership.
Almeida and the rest of the team enter this upcoming season with big goals: “A state championship, competing in every game even against private schools, and having an undefeated season.” Ben believes the team stands out compared to others in the state. “The coaching staff is on another level, one of the best in the nation; everyone enjoys themselves and works super hard,” outlining the trust both players and coaches have in each other. He is also focused on growing into a leadership role, hoping to have a positive impact, especially on first-year players. “I hope to connect with the young guys, like freshmen, and make sure all new players understand Coach Donahue’s expectations and the work ethic he expects. Individually, he hopes to grab the most ground balls on the team and make All-County.
On the field, Coach Donahue has high praise for Almeida. “As a player, Ben is going to be one of the top short-stick midfielders due to his athletic ability and change of direction. He will be an important asset to the defense and transition game.” Donahue also shares Ben’s attitude off the field: “Ben does everything right and does the right thing when no one is looking.” Highlighting what it means to be a positive influence on teammates and friends. Almeida also had high praise for his coaching staff.
When he’s not focused on lacrosse, Almeida enjoys playing pickleball, gaming, and spending time with his girlfriend. He credits his father as his biggest role model for teaching him what it takes to be successful, and he also looks up to former teammate Brandon Sybrant for his leadership, kindness, and skill.
Ben Almeida hopes to have another fantastic season with the team. While a state title remains the ultimate goal, he is focused on leading by example and helping Urbana continue its tradition of success in the seasons ahead.
