As the holiday season begins and families around the globe shop for gifts for their children, it’s important to remember families who need additional support during this time. Toys can be a costly expense for many families, so charitable drives designed for the purpose of donating new toys are a valuable way to spread cheer to parents and children alike.
Similar to its November food drive, the Spanish Honor Society is participating in a toy drive of its own. Partnering with a local nonprofit, Helping Hands & Caring Hearts, the drive is accepting donations between December 1 and December 15.
Helping Hands & Caring Hearts is no stranger to bountiful deeds, since its establishment in 2022, the organization has made it its mission to provide food, personal care items, and gifts for the holiday season. The work they’ve done has certainly made a positive impact, in 2023 alone, they are credited with donating toys to nearly 400 children in need. To help their cause continue to flourish, all members of the Urbana community are encouraged to participate or spread the word. For those who do choose to donate, the donation bin can be found near the main office.
The student President of the Spanish Honors Society, Sophia Hernandez, says the meaning of the drive is about fostering unity and helping those within Frederick County. She explained that it is, “a way to give back to the community and get students at the school involved.” Large-scale projects like these are admirable, considering the work they take to plan. Coordinating with the organizations they work alongside requires a lot of communication from both sides to be sure their schedules align, but ultimately the payoff is worth it.
Hernandez shared a final message: “Donate toys, it’s for a good cause and everyone could use a little gift this holiday season.”
In the spirit of the season, foster the kind of generosity and altruism that should be celebrated. By helping where you can, you not only support those in need, but you build a strong community with a shared purpose.
