Urbana High School welcomes a new teacher this school year, Ms. Shriner. Her classroom, located in the B-wing downstairs hallway brings horticulture, agriculture, and pre-vet animal classes to life in her charming classroom that connects to the thriving greenhouse.
Born in Washington D.C., Ms. Shriner grew up here in the DMV and currently lives in northern Frederick on 18 acres of land with her husband, three kids, three cats, fifty goats, and a few rabbits. Growing up, Ms. Shriner always had a love for animals and was raised in an agriculture environment with goats and vegetation so it was natural for her to pursue a career that involved the cultivation industry. As a result she earned her two undergraduate degrees in animal science and agricultural education. Not only does she teach four classes, she supervises and leads the FFA (Future Farmers of America) of UHS.
Ms Shriner was an avid FFA participant back in her years of high school which earned her a scholarship. Her journey led to her giving a speech at the FFA National Convention in Annapolis, Indiana. From there she joined her school’s collegiate and participated in the career show advocating for FFA. The experience encouraged her to earn her degree in FFA and pursue teaching.
Ms. Shriner stresses the importance of knowing where the clothes on our back come from and how the food on our plates is harvested. She encourages students to participate in her classes to help them learn about our natural resources and spread awareness about food issues the globe is facing. It’s comforting to hear that Ms Shriner is adjusting nicely. “The school is a great environment, everyone is really welcoming and I’m glad I get to do it all with my daughter” We are happy to have you at Urbana Ms Shriner!
