As spring sports return to the spotlight, the Urbana High School boys’ lacrosse team is preparing for one of the most anticipated season openers in recent memory. Their first matchup: a road test against powerhouse Severna Park, one of the top 3 public schools in Maryland, a program known for its discipline, speed, and championship pedigree. But the Hawks aren’t intimidated; they’re energized.
During this week’s practice, three key upperclassmen shared their thoughts; with opening day approaching, Urbana lacrosse carries a clear edge into its matchup with Severna Park. The Hawks aren’t just eager; they’re motivated by the lessons of last season and determined to start strong.
“We’re hungry,” junior Dylan Maloney said, noting how last year’s challenges sharpened the team’s resilience. Facing a disciplined opponent only heightens their focus. “Severna Park is a tough first opponent, but that just makes us more locked in.”
Senior Jayden Sharper sees the opener as a tone‑setter. “We know what we’re capable of,” he said. “We want to come out fast, communicate, and show that Urbana lacrosse is here to compete.”
The players know the Falcons’ reputation well. “They don’t make many mistakes,” junior Hendrix Warburton said. “For us, it’s about matching that discipline and staying composed.” Maloney added that controlling the tempo will be key: “If we control the pace instead of reacting to it, we’ll be in a great spot.”
In practice, the focus has been on chemistry and fundamentals, communication, footwork, stickwork, and clean transitions. “Everyone’s bought in,” Sharper said. “You can feel it.”
As for game day, the excitement is unmistakable. “There’s nothing like that first game energy,” Maloney said. Warburton is eager to see the team tested, while Sharper, entering his final season, feels the moment more deeply. “It’s my last first game,” he said. “I want to make it count.”
And as the Hawks step into a season filled with expectation, one thing is clear: they’re not just opening the year; they’re setting a standard. The work is done, the mindset is set, and Urbana are ready to prove exactly who they are.
