Here at Urbana, students have the opportunity to get involved in sports.
Although it can be difficult to push yourself to improve, the effort truly pays off in the end.
Being in a sport not only helps you become more social with your teammates, but also helps you build strong bonds with coaches, which can be important to know where you need to improve. Once involved in a sport, students must maintain strong time management skills to balance practice, games, and academics.
A recent article from i9Sports explains why it’s good to try winter sports. The article highlights the benefits of staying busy for mental health, participating in multiple activities, and avoiding being limited to a single interest.
Urbana offers many options you can explore including indoor track, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, Swim and Dive, and so much more! Basketball teams usually start conditioning weeks before tryouts, and cheer teams begin training early as well. Although some options have already begun, students interested in joining should not hesitate to ask counselors or friends involved in the programs.
Even if you’re not sure what you want to do, it’s always worth giving something a try so you can discover what interests you most. Many students actually find their favorite activity during the winter season because the schedules, team sizes, and coaching styles can feel different from fall and spring sports.
Even if you aren’t into playing sports, come out and support our Hawks. You never know. You might not be interested in a team during the summer, but winter brings new opportunities to get involved! Plus, winter games are indoors, which means warm bleachers, loud crowds, and the perfect vibe to support your classmates. It’s a great way to meet new people, build friendships, and gain valuable skills. This is especially helpful for incoming freshmen who want to learn and grow through new experiences that could become life-changing opportunities.
If students are interested in joining a winter sport, they should see their counselors for more information.
We hope to see Hawks out supporting teams during the winter sports season.
