On Martin Luther King Jr Day, most of us woke up late and enjoyed the day off. However, a couple of our Urbana students woke up early to serve.

Ida Francis along with her friend Lark Carrington went to Bernard W Brown Community Center on Monday morning. They got there at 10 AM and spent the next four hours making hats for children with pediatric cancer.

Along with being a federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr Day is also a Day Of Service. According to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, MLK Day is the only holiday observed as a National Day of Service. In light of this, the Bernard Community center held this hat making event.

This is Ida Francis’ first year going to the Day of Service at the community center. Davis liked seeing everyone from all over the county at the event. It was just fun to see everyone come together to do something for kids,” said Davis.

Ida Francis and Lark Carrington both went to the event as representatives of Urbana’s ASCEND Club. Mrs. Davis runs the club, which runs all year round and meets once a month.
